China puts pressure on the US with sanctions

China has announced sanctions against a number of members of the US Congress, American officials and heads of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that Beijing accuses of interfering in China’s internal affairs, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported, citing a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

“The Chinese government has decided to impose sanctions against members of the US Congress, officials and NGO leaders who have behaved incorrectly in matters related to Hong Kong. Any illegal actions by the American side will be met with a firm response from China and corresponding countermeasures,” the statement said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun explained that the sanctions were a response to the US restrictive measures aimed at the Chinese central government’s representative offices in Hong Kong and six officials of the region’s administration.

According to him, Washington’s actions constitute “gross interference in Hong Kong affairs and China’s domestic politics.”
