Despite the White House’s efforts to prevent the trade war from escalating, China still announced new tariffs on American goods, just hours after private warnings from the Trump administration.
According to CNN, Washington also again insisted that Xi Jinping personally request a meeting with Trump. However, the morning for American officials began without any signals from Beijing – no request for a meeting, no attempt to soften the rhetoric.
Instead, Xi Jinping issued a tough statement:
“China has developed thanks to its own strength and hard work. We are not afraid of unfair pressure and have never expected a handout from others.”
Analysts say this response only deepened tensions between the two countries.
