Գիտնականները հաշվարկել են Երկրի վրա ապրող բոլոր մրջյունների թիվը, այդ միջատների ընդհանուր թիվը հասնում է 20 կվադրիլիոնի (մեկին հաջորդում է 15 զրո կամ մեկ միլիոն միլիարդ), ասվում է Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences գիտական ամսագրում հրապարակված հետազոտության մեջ։
Հետազոտության մեջ ասվում է, որ միավորելով բոլոր մայրցամաքների և հիմնական էկոհամակարգերի տվյալները՝ Երկրի վրա հաշվվել է 20 կվադրիլիոն մրջյուն՝ 12 մեգատոն ընդհանուր կենսազանգվածով:
Գիտնականները նշել են, որ այս ցուցանիշը գերազանցում է վայրի թռչունների և կաթնասունների ընդհանուր կենսազանգվածը և հավասար է մարդու կենսազանգվածի 20%-ին։Նրանք ընդգծել են, որ մրջյունների թիվը մոլորակով մեկ բաշխված է անհավասարաչափ։ Դրանց մեծ մասն ապրում է արևադարձային գոտում։
Նշվում է, որ գիտնականների վերլուծությունը հիմնված է 489 ուսումնասիրությունների վրա, որոնք ընդգրկում են բոլոր մայրցամաքները, հիմնական էկոհամակարգերն ու բնակավայրերը:
