Washington and Beijing trade talks have reached a deadlock, which may require a phone call from the leaders of the two countries to resolve, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Fox News.
«The talks with China are a bit of a deadlock at this point. I think we’ll have more talks with them over the next few weeks, and I think at some point we may have a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping,» he said.
Recall that on May 10-11, China-US trade and economic talks were held in Switzerland, following which the parties agreed to reduce the additional duties introduced in early April to 10%, starting on May 14.
In early February, the US introduced duties on imports of a number of goods from China in the amount of 10%, doubling the rate a month later. On April 2, Trump announced «mirror» tariffs for a number of countries, with the rate for Beijing being 54%. After several rounds of increases, the rates were 145% for China from the US and 125% for Washington from Beijing.
