Former senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, Brian Lanza, has become a consultant to Lukoil’s international division. He worked with Trump during the 2024 election, Politico reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

According to the publication’s sources, Lanza is helping the Russian oil company find a buyer for its foreign assets. He and his firm, Mercury Public Affairs, are coordinating the deal with the US government.

One of Politico’s sources noted that Lanza was one of those who helped Lukoil extend its sale deadline. On December 10, the US Treasury extended its license allowing Lukoil to sell its foreign assets until January 17 of next year.

Lanza is also working on a possible sale of the assets to the American investment bank Xtellus Partners, the publication reported. According to Reuters, the bank has become the leading contender for the Russian oil company’s foreign assets. Lanza began working on this project for Lukoil in recent weeks.

In October, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Lukoil, Rosneft, and their subsidiaries. The restrictions include freezing all of the companies’ US assets and prohibiting American entities from doing business with them.

Lukoil soon announced it was seeking a buyer for its foreign assets. These include oil and gas production projects in the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, and Latin America, refineries in Bulgaria, Romania, and the Netherlands, gas stations in the US, Finland, Romania, and Moldova, and international trading. They are valued at $22 billion.
