Much of the Gaza Strip has been reduced to rubble, littered with 68 million tons of rubble. Clearing it will cost more than $1 trillion, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Through thousands of Israeli airstrikes, ground combat, and controlled explosions, more than 123,000 buildings in the enclave have been destroyed, with another 75,000 damaged to varying degrees. This represents 81% of all buildings in the Strip, according to the latest UN analysis of satellite imagery. Clearing Gaza to prepare for reconstruction is expected to take years, costing an estimated $1 trillion.
During the fighting in Gaza since October 2023, Israeli forces have dropped approximately 70,000 tons of shells and bombs on the enclave. According to an analysis by the international NGO Handicap International, between 5% and 10% of these bombs failed to explode.
The Wall Street Journal report states that large-scale debris clearing can only begin if Israeli authorities allow the entry of heavy machinery and equipment into Gaza to clear debris and destroy unexploded ordnance.
