The European Parliament is considering accelerating the phaseout of Russian energy imports. Oil supplies are planned to be banned starting in 2026, and gas supplies from 2027, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.
The European Parliament’s relevant committee plans to vote on amendments to the RePowerEU program to reduce Russian energy imports on October 16. A majority of votes in the EU Council and the European Parliament is required for the measures to be adopted.
RePowerEU initially proposed phasing out Russian oil and gas by the end of 2027. The plan also includes measures to combat Russia’s “shadow fleet,” the EU’s term for vessels Russia allegedly uses to evade sanctions.
According to Bloomberg, the European Commission also plans to impose duties on Russian oil imported through the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary and Slovakia. This requires the consent of all EU countries.
TurkStream remains the only route for Russian pipeline gas supplies to Europe. Russia is second only to the United States among LNG suppliers to the EU, with a 15% share.
