US President Donald Trump has criticized billionaire George Soros, accusing him of funding protests, and suggested that his administration could launch an investigation into the financier or his family.
The protesters “are getting paid for their profession by Soros and other people,” Bloomberg quotes Trump as saying.
“And we will investigate Soros because I believe this is a RICO case (a 1970 US federal law designed to combat organized crime) against him and other people. Because these are more than just protests. These are real unrest,” the American leader said on the Fox & Friends program.
This week, Trump visited a restaurant unrelated to his business to highlight the successes of his fight against crime in Washington. But the photo shoot was interrupted by protesters who called Trump “the Hitler of our time.” “The problem is the radical left, they’re evil, they’re terrible, they’re politically savvy,” Trump added.
The Institutions and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO, is typically used to prosecute organized crime.
Trump’s comments come as the US president says he will continue to investigate political opponents following the murder of Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and Trump ally.
