Canada will cancel retaliatory tariffs on most goods from the United States, seeking to reduce tensions in relations with the White House. This was reported on August 22 by Bloomberg.
“A wide range of consumer goods made in the United States will no longer be subject to a 25% tariff when imported into Canada if they are shipped in accordance with the provisions of the agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada,” the article says.
It is specified that the Canadian government will change its tariff policy so that it is more in line with the US measures, but the authorities intend to maintain import duties of 25% on American steel and aluminum, as well as on cars.
On August 1, US President Donald Trump imposed additional duties on imported goods from the European Union (EU) and more than 60 foreign countries. It was noted that the highest new duties were imposed on goods from Laos, Myanmar (40% each) and Syria (41%). In particular, Trump raised import duties on goods from Canada from 25 to 35%.
Before that, on June 27, the US President announced the termination of trade negotiations with Canada due to the introduction of a tax on digital services of American technology companies.
