The European Parliament is considering proposals to accelerate the EU’s phase-out of Russian gas by one year, from January 2027.
This was reported by Reuters, citing documents containing amendments from legislators to the EC proposal.
Last month, the EC submitted a proposal to parliament to phase out all Russian gas imports by January 1, 2028. This proposal will serve as a legal basis for formulating an additional initiative to accelerate the phase-out. According to the new proposal, the EU will begin a phase-out of new and short-term contracts as early as January 2026, the agency notes.
According to EU diplomats, governments are unlikely to support moving the ban forward by a year. However, legislators will be able to use this requirement as a negotiating lever for other changes. For example, the authors of the initiative propose introducing penalties for companies that violate the ban, including revoking their energy trading licenses.
