Hungary Considers Replacing Russian Oil

Hungary’s largest oil company MOL has considered alternatives to Russian oil supplies via pipeline, which are putting the country under pressure from the European Union. The best option is to restore the oil pipeline from Odessa to receive crude delivered by tankers to the Ukrainian port.

This was reported by Szabolcs Pal Szabo, MOL’s senior vice president for supply chain management, Bloomberg reports.

The top manager explained that the oil could go to Brody, which is near the Ukrainian-Polish border, where the Ukrainian oil pipeline connects to the southern branch of the Druzhba oil pipeline.

There, it will be possible to use the existing infrastructure. “The Odessa pipeline will mean access to all types of alternative oil thanks to access to the sea. It will serve regional, European and Ukrainian supply security,” he explained.

The EU leadership, introducing sanctions on the purchase of Russian oil and oil products, made an exception for Hungary and Slovakia, since these countries have no alternative sources of raw materials. However, by the end of 2027, Brussels intends to stop this route as well in order to completely end dependence on energy resources from Russia.
