The Vilamoura tanker, carrying 1 million barrels of oil, exploded off the coast of Libya. The vessel is currently being towed to Greece to assess the damage, Bloomberg reports.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, although the tanker visited Russian ports to load oil. According to the Greek company TMS Tankers, which manages the vessel, the explosion led to flooding of the engine room, but there was no pollution of the environment, and the crew is safe.
According to the consulting company Vanguard Tech, this is the fifth explosion on tankers calling at Russian ports since the beginning of 2025. In recent months, a number of such incidents have prompted ship owners to check the hulls of ships for mines using divers and underwater vehicles.

According to Bloomberg, Vilamoura called at the Russian port of Ust-Luga in April, where it loaded Kazakh oil, not Russian. In May, the vessel was also at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal near the port of Novorossiysk, which mainly exports oil from Kazakhstan.

According to maritime risk consultancy Vanguard Tech, four other vessels have exploded since the start of the year. All had recently called at Russian ports.
