US President Donald Trump “remains receptive” to reaching out to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt says, even though the North Korean leader appears less interested in negotiating his nuclear and ballistic missile programs, NBC News reports.
Trump is open to dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the White House says.
“Trump would like to see the progress that was made at that summit in Singapore,” Leavitt told reporters yesterday, referring to the first face-to-face summit between the two leaders in 2018.
The White House spokeswoman was responding to a report that North Korea had rejected a letter from Trump aimed at reopening channels of communication between Washington and Pyongyang.
Earlier, both North and South Korea appeared to turn off propaganda loudspeakers along their shared border in an attempt to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
The two countries remain technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
Kim has continued to push his weapons programs since his last meeting with Trump in 2019 and has further strengthened his security partnership with Russia.
