Hungary and Slovakia boycott EU initiative to stop buying Russian fuel

Hungary and Slovakia intend to oppose the European Commission’s initiative to stop buying gas, oil and nuclear fuel from Russia. Both countries will vote against this decision on June 16 at a meeting in Luxembourg.

This was reported by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Facebook.

Szijjarto held talks with Slovakian Foreign Minister Jurij Blanar, after which the parties agreed on a common position. In their opinion, the refusal of Russian energy resources is a “gross violation of sovereignty.” Szijjarto emphasized that energy policy issues are an internal matter for states, and Budapest does not agree to change existing energy sources to more expensive alternatives “either for the sake of Brussels or for the sake of Kyiv.”

The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry also said that the Hungarian delegation “will protect Hungarian families” from rising utility rates. He called the possible refusal of Russian supplies “blackmail by Volodymyr Zelensky”.

Earlier, a diplomatic conflict broke out between Kyiv and Budapest. In an interview with Válasz Online, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the Hungarian authorities of interfering in Ukraine’s internal affairs and using the war for political purposes. In response, official Budapest declared “agitation for the Hungarian opposition” on the part of Kyiv. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, in turn, reproached Hungary for searching for imaginary enemies.
