Republican Senator Lindsey Graham intends to push for new sanctions against Russia before the G7 summit at the end of June.
He announced this in a joint statement with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal. The summit will be held in Alberta, Canada, from June 15 to 17. According to the senators, Europe and the United States must take steps to stop China and India from buying cheap Russian oil.
“We hope to have sanctions in place by the G7 summit, in coordination with Europe, to send a clear message to China,” they said after meetings in Paris with several high-ranking French officials.
Graham’s bill would impose 500 percent tariffs on imports from countries that buy Russian oil products and uranium. According to the senators, the bill has 82 co-authors.
According to Bloomberg, US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of adopting this bill if Russia “does not make concessions.” The Atlantic wrote that the US president could make a decision based on the results of the second round of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv delegations, which will take place on June 2 in Istanbul.
