Apple is planning to make major changes to the numbering of its operating systems, Bloomberg reported on May 29, citing sources.
According to the journalists’ sources, Apple’s next operating systems will be named after the year following their release, rather than the version number. That is, the current version of iOS 18 will be replaced by iOS 26, rather than iOS 19, as previously assumed.
The other operating systems will be called iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.
Apple decided to make the changes for the sake of consistency in its branding, as well as to avoid confusing customers and developers. The current operating systems have different numbers – iOS 18, watchOS 12, macOS 15, and visionOS 2, since their initial versions were released at different times.
Apple is expected to announce the changes at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9.
An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.
