French President Emmanuel Macron called on the US to impose additional sanctions against Russia if it demonstrates its refusal to peacefully resolve the war against Ukraine.
This was reported by the BFMTV channel.
Answering a question about the second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine, Macron stressed that Washington’s position would be a kind of “trust test”.
“If Russia shows that it is not ready for peace, the US must reaffirm its commitment to sanctions. This will be a trust test for the Americans,” the French president said.
Macron also said that he discussed the situation with US President Donald Trump 48 hours ago and noted his impatience for progress.
“Now the question is what are we doing about it? We, the Europeans, are ready,” he stressed.
The French leader assured that Europe’s position remains unchanged: “We continue to believe in the international order, cooperation, open trade and respect for the rules.”
Donald Trump had previously spoken about the possibility of introducing new sanctions against Russia amid the escalation and increasing number of strikes on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. However, he later said that he was holding off on taking tough steps for now if it could harm the conclusion of a possible agreement.
