The German government assumes that the Nord Stream pipeline will not be launched at all. This was stated to journalists at a briefing by German Cabinet spokesman Steffen Meyer.
“The government’s position on Nord Stream has not changed. We do not assume that it will start working,” Meyer said.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz supports possible new EU sanctions against the Nord Stream project, since the introduction of a ban on the restoration of pipelines at the European level will close the issue of the project’s fate in German domestic politics.
EU sanctions on Nord Stream could be directed against the company operating the pipelines or other companies that could take over their management, as well as work on their restoration, one of the FT’s sources said.
