Vietnam’s Ministry of Information Technology has instructed telecom operators to restrict access to the Telegram messenger until June 2, 2025.
This was reported by Reuters, citing official documents.
The reason for the blocking was the company’s refusal to cooperate with local law enforcement agencies, in particular, to provide user data as part of a criminal investigation. The documents note that Telegram failed to comply with requests related to the disclosure of information about suspects in the commission of crimes.
According to the Vietnamese police, about 68% of the 9.6 thousand channels and groups operating on the platform in the country are presumably associated with fraud, drug trafficking and terrorism.
Official representatives of Telegram, as well as the Ministry of Information Technology of Vietnam, have not yet commented on the decision.
