The European Union (EU) plans to introduce a tax on goods ordered online and imported into the community from third countries, mainly from China.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing sources and a draft proposal.
The draft does not specify the specific amount of the duty, but European officials assume that it will be about €2 per parcel.
Part of the funds will be used to cover customs costs, the rest – to the EU budget. According to estimates, the initiative can bring in billions of euros annually.
About 4.6 billion goods ordered by citizens via the Internet are imported into the EU every year.
