The Trump administration has developed a plan to spend about $250 million in foreign aid to expel refugees who have received temporary protection.
The Washington Post reports this, citing documents from the Department of Homeland Security.
The documents say that more than 200,000 Ukrainians and 500,000 Haitians could be subject to expulsion. They are in the United States under the so-called “temporary protected status” granted by the Biden administration. In addition, Afghans, Palestinians, Libyans, Sudanese, Syrians, and Yemenis are mentioned. The UN Migration Service does not support the return of people to any of these places, the draft documents say.
It is proposed to use funds from the US foreign aid account to return people in “temporary protected status” to their countries. They come from immigration and refugee funds, which have traditionally been used to help refugees in the United States and to help those who return to their home countries — but only when it is safe to do so.
The draft documents were labeled “preliminary,” The Washington Post reports. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, described them as “outdated.” She said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem “has not made a final decision” on Temporary Protected Status for Ukrainians or Haitians.
However, The Washington Post reports that last week, the department and the State Department signed an agreement detailing the same process and setting out $250 million in foreign aid, but not naming the specific countries that would be expelled.
