South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Deok-keun has asked US official Jamieson Greer to lift all customs duties on South Korean goods. This was reported on May 16 by the News1 agency, citing diplomats.
“We have once again requested an exemption from all country-specific (mutual) tariffs and tariffs on products,” said South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Deok-keun during consultations with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
It is specified that the countries have concluded a free trade agreement.
Representatives of South Korea and the US have agreed to hold the next “technical talks” that will address non-tariff barriers and trade imbalances. The next meeting is scheduled for May 19 in Washington.
On May 2, acting Prime Minister Han Deok-soo told The Financial Times (FT) that he would not oppose import tariffs ordered by US President Donald Trump. He said the country was indebted to the US for aid it provided in the mid-20th century.
