Apple plans to raise prices for iPhones

Apple is considering raising prices for a new line of iPhones that will be introduced in the fall of 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported on May 12, citing sources.

At the same time, Apple is wary of linking the price increase with US tariffs on goods from China, where most of the company’s devices are assembled, so it is looking for other reasons that will explain this step, the publication’s sources said.

As WSJ notes, the company is trying to link the increase in the cost of iPhones with the introduction of new features and design changes. The newspaper indicates that the new line will include a device in an ultra-thin case (it will replace the iPhone 16 Plus).

Even before the start of the tariff war between the US and China, WSJ notes, Apple moved production for the American market to India, but, according to sources, the most profitable high-end phones, such as the Pro and Pro Max, will mainly be produced in China, since it is not yet possible to establish mass production in India. Apple is also exploring the possibility of moving some iPhone production to the United States, but The Wall Street Journal estimates that it will take years.

Apple traditionally releases a new line of iPhones in the fall. Current iPhone models in the United States cost from $799 for the iPhone 16 and from $1,199 for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The tariff war between the United States and China, as Apple CEO Tim Cook previously said, will lead to additional expenses for the company in the amount of $900 million in the current quarter and even more in the following ones.

The US and Chinese authorities announced on May 12 that they would reduce mutual tariffs for 90 days, starting on May 14. As The Wall Street Journal notes, most tariffs will be suspended, but the 20% US tariffs on Chinese goods, including phones, which Donald Trump imposed at the beginning of his second presidential term, will remain in effect.

Apple, as Bloomberg sources reported in March, is planning to make major changes to the interface of the iPhone, iPad and Mac in 2025, changing the appearance of the operating systems.
