The Irish data protection regulator this week fined ByteDance, the owner of the short video service TikTok, €530 million for violating the EU GDPR, Reuters reports.
The commission found that ByteDance failed to prove that it restricted access by Chinese employees to EU user data. European law requires that data be stored in the region. The company was ordered to bring its data processing into compliance with EU laws within six months.

ByteDance representatives announced their intention to appeal the decision. They claim that the decision does not take into account security measures introduced in 2023. ByteDance explained that EU user data is stored in special data centers in Europe and the United States, and the company has never received requests from Chinese authorities for access to this data.

TikTok’s user base in Europe is about 175 million people. This is not the first major fine for ByteDance in the region. In 2023, the company was fined 345 million euros for violating rules on the processing of children’s personal data.
