The Trump administration has reached out to China to begin talks on the escalating tariff standoff between the two countries, Chinese state media reported.
According to a post by Yuyuantantian, a social media account linked to Chinese state television channel CCTV, U.S. officials have expressed their willingness to begin tariff talks through various channels.
“The U.S. is very concerned about the negotiations at this point,” the outlet said. “The Trump administration is under pressure on a number of fronts,” the report added.
The announcement comes amid growing speculation about possible trade talks between Washington and Beijing, with both sides expressing conflicting positions. Trump has repeatedly claimed that his administration is in dialogue with China, while Beijing has denied any trade discussions.
On Wednesday, Trump’s top trade adviser Jamison Greer told Fox News that there are no trade talks with China.
Trump has previously hinted at the possibility of easing tariffs on China if Beijing agrees to talks. However, China insists that the US must de-escalate tensions before any dialogue can begin.
The trade war between the world’s two largest economies escalated in April when Trump imposed tariffs of 145% on imports from China. Beijing sharply condemned the move and responded with tariffs of up to 125%.
