Billionaire Elon Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has practically switched to remote work in the White House, White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles told The New York Post (NYP).
“Instead of meeting with him in person, I talk to him on the phone, but the result is the same,” she said. “He’s just not physically present as much as he used to be.”
As NYP notes, Musk is preparing to leave his position in DOGE by the end of May, after which he will become an unofficial consultant to the White House.
On April 23, the entrepreneur promised to reduce his working hours in the administration of US President Donald Trump to one or two days a week and focus on his companies. This was preceded by a 9% drop in profits at Tesla, founded by Musk.
DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) is a temporary US federal agency created as a result of the transformation of the Digital Technology Service in January 2025 by Trump’s order. Musk is considered the initiator of the department, whose tasks include reducing government spending and restructuring federal agencies. As part of this initiative, another Trump decree canceled remote work for government employees. Musk claimed that by 2026, the US will be able to reduce the budget deficit from the current $2 trillion to $1 trillion. DOGE initiated the dismissal of thousands of federal employees, including veterans in the civil service, as well as a sharp reduction in aid to other countries. Analysts linked the decline in Tesla sales to Musk’s actions as DOGE, CNN reported.
