Europe puts an end to Russian gas

The European Commission is considering banning EU companies from entering into new contracts for the supply of Russian fossil fuels.

This was reported by Reuters, citing a senior official.

Options under consideration include trade measures that would limit spot purchases of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by European firms.
In addition, the European Commission is looking for legal ways for companies to be able to terminate existing contracts with Russian suppliers without penalties.

As a number of EU member states oppose the introduction of sanctions on Russian gas, the commission is looking for alternative instruments to speed up Europe’s transition away from Russian energy.

A roadmap for reducing dependence on Russian gas is planned to be presented on May 6. The document should outline measures that will cause more harm to Russia than to EU countries and will not critically affect Europe’s energy security.

Officials also abandoned the idea of including a ban on Russian LNG imports in sanctions packages, as some countries threatened to block such measures.
