China is stepping up pressure in its trade war with the US, warning other countries against entering into agreements that could harm Beijing’s interests.
This is reported by Bloomberg.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said it opposes any deals that are “detrimental to China’s interests” and threatened countermeasures if they are concluded. Beijing also stressed its readiness to “jointly resist unilateral bullying.”
The statement came amid talks between a number of countries and the US over reducing or eliminating tariffs previously imposed by Donald Trump. Washington is demanding that allies limit trade with China, especially in sensitive sectors, and is even considering introducing secondary tariffs on imports from countries with close ties to Beijing.
In response to these moves, China has stepped up diplomatic ties with Southeast Asia and Europe. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia last week to strengthen regional coordination.
Beijing has also previously announced its own tariffs and export restrictions on rare earths, bringing supplies to a virtual standstill.
Xi stressed that China and Europe must work together to safeguard global trade and resist unilateral pressure from the United States.
