Russia has not left Syria without grain

Syria has resumed seaborne grain shipments from Russia. The first ship with wheat arrived in the Syrian port of Latakia since the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad in December last year. The new Syrian leadership claims that the import of grain and food does not violate US and UN sanctions, but financial difficulties are hampering deals with international suppliers.

The Syrian authorities do not focus on the Russian origin of the cargo. According to them, the ship delivered 6,600 tons of wheat, but the sender country has not been officially named. A source among traders told Reuters that the wheat arrived from Russia.

“This is an important step towards economic recovery,” said representatives of the Syrian border service. In 2025, the country was mainly dependent on land supplies from neighboring states.

It should be noted that Russia and Iran were key suppliers of wheat and oil products for the Assad government, but after his flight to Moscow in 2024, supplies were suspended.

This year, Moscow began contacts with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, which controls power in Syria. On February 12, a telephone conversation took place between Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Russian President Vladimir Putin, after which cooperation intensified.
