Digital identity and digital authentication, secure and rapid digital transactions across public and private sectors — imID is setting a new standard for digital identity in Armenia.
On April 15, the official launch of the imID office and the presentation of the project took place. The event brought together representatives from the Government of Armenia, state and international institutions, and partner organizations.
In the age of technological advancements, digital transformation has become a top priority — and Armenia is no exception. As part of the country’s digitalization strategy, Armenia is also advancing the protection of personal data and the implementation of fast and reliable processes in the digital domain — with Trust Service Providers (TSPs) at the core of this transformation.
To support this vision and deliver an effective digital identity solution, ten Armenian banks and three telecommunications companies came together in 2024 to establish imID. The Founding Board of imID includes Bank, Ameriabank, Ardshinbank, Armeconombank, Converse Bank, Evocabank, Fast Bank, IDBank, Inecobank, Unibank, as well as Team Telecom Armenia, Ucom, and Viva.
Karen Mkoyan, CEO of imID, presented the mission, and long-term vision of the company.
“We are launching a holistic set of services that will ensure wide accessibility for Armenian citizens — making secure digital authentication and e-signatures available to everyone,” said Karen Mkoyan. “Our initiative aims to create a digital identity ecosystem that will set a new trajectory for Armenia’s digital future and serve as the foundation of digital trust in the country. I am proud to announce that imID is now operational, built on entirely new and modern infrastructure designed to fully comply with the EU eIDAS regulation. This means we are creating not just for today, but for a secure future in which Armenian citizens and organizations can be seamlessly integrated intointernational digital systems.”
“Welcome to imID — your identity has been securely verified.” The official opening of the imID office was symbolically marked by a user identification within the platform, performed by Tigran Simonyan, Chairman of the Founding Board and Deputy CEO – Chief Digital Platforms and Technology Officer at Acba bank OJSC.
According to Tigran, the Founding Board came together around a shared vision — recognizing the critical importance and relevance of building a digital society.
“At the core of the idea is the creation of a secure digital alternative for electronicidentity, all types of documents issued to individuals, as well as contracts and documents used in various legal relationships. The entire world is already moving toward the development of Digital Identity Wallets, and by building a product and
service of this quality in Armenia, we aim to apply it effectively beyond our country’s borders — including exporting technologies and ready-made, tested solutions to
become a leading player in the field. We have every opportunity and advantage to achieve this, particularly a capable team and a clear goal — to comply with one of the world’s highest industry standards by obtaining EU eIDAS certification and becoming a Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP),” said Tigran Simonyan.
eIDAS (Electronic Identification and Trust Services) is a European Union regulation that establishes a legal framework for electronic identification and trust services. It ensures that digital identities and transactions are recognized and legally valid across EU countries, making digital commerce more reliable and efficient.
According to Hayk Yesayan, Executive Director of Team Telecom Armenia, the practical benefits of imID will become increasingly evident as more citizens begin to use it widelyin the near future.
“imID plays a key role in Armenia’s digital transformation. With its introduction, the development of the digital ecosystem and the integration of various tools will acceleratesignificantly. imID will help address a number of challenges — primarily the prevention of fraud, which remains a major issue across all sectors. The founding team has successfully accomplished all the goals set for this stage of development. The next step is to scale up the usage of imID, as it significantly reduces a variety of resourceexpenditures — and most importantly, saves our time,” noted Hayk Yesayan.
The guests also had the opportunity to explore the demo version of imID‘s services and get acquainted with its offerings.
