Tesla was forced to suspend the supply of components from China for the Cybercab electric vehicle and the Semi truck after a sharp increase in tariffs on Chinese goods in the United States at the initiative of President Donald Trump.
This was reported by Reuters, citing sources. “The move could disrupt Tesla’s plans to launch mass production of the long-awaited models, which Elon Musk has been actively promoting to investors as key innovations,” the agency writes.
The company was ready to cover the costs after the introduction of a 34 percent duty, but after the tariffs were increased to 84% and then to 125%, the total burden rose to 145%, which made importing components economically impossible. As a result, Tesla stopped the process.
Deliveries were supposed to begin in the coming months, test production in October, and mass production of models in 2026. The Cybercab was planned to be assembled in Texas, the Semi in Nevada.
The situation showed how Trump’s policies can negatively affect even his allies – in this case, Musk, who has publicly supported many of the former president’s initiatives.
As The Washington Post previously reported, Musk personally asked Trump to cancel the new tariffs, citing risks to the global supply chain.
In addition, Tesla stopped accepting orders for the Model S and Model X after China retaliated by imposing 125 percent tariffs on American goods.
