The European Union continues to discuss reducing trade barriers with the US, but is ready for a tough response if new US tariffs are introduced.
This was reported by CNBC, citing an internal document of the European Commission. According to the EC trade representative Olof Gill, the EU prefers to negotiate rather than enter into tariff wars that harm the economies of both sides. However, according to him, “all options remain on the table” if the negotiations end without results.
The negotiations between Brussels and Washington are focused on the tariffs previously introduced by Donald Trump, including 25% tariffs on steel, aluminum and cars.
On April 2, Trump announced the introduction of customs duties on goods from 185 countries and territories. On April 9, he announced that he was suspending tariff increases for 90 days for 75 countries that had shown a willingness to negotiate. They will be subject to import tariffs of 10%.
