European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that if negotiations with the US on import duties fail, the EU could impose additional taxes on American tech giants such as Google and Meta. This was reported by the Financial Times.
The new taxes could affect digital advertising revenues, which would be a significant blow to large IT companies. Von der Leyen noted that Brussels is striving to reach a balanced agreement with Washington, but is simultaneously developing a set of measures in case of an escalation of the trade conflict.
She also stressed that the “global trade war” started by the US is radically changing the landscape of world trade and is becoming a “turning point in relations with the US”.
“We will not go back to business as usual,” the head of the European Commission said. According to her, before April 2, when US President Donald
Trump announced the introduction of new duties, the European Commission tried to negotiate, but did not find mutual understanding. Shortly after that, the EU agreed on a package of retaliatory measures.
