Trump Demands Gazprom Gas Pipeline from Ukraine

The Donald Trump administration is demanding that Ukraine hand over the Gazprom gas pipeline, which runs through its territory to Europe, to the United States, Reuters writes.

“The tension was caused by a new, more expansive draft agreement presented by the Donald Trump administration. The document provides for the United States to have privileged access to Ukrainian deposits and obliges Kyiv to transfer production revenues to a common investment fund,” the article says.

The agreement does not provide security guarantees for Ukraine. It is known that Ukraine has already hired Hogan Lovells lawyers.

A representative of the US Treasury Department confirmed that negotiations are ongoing between the countries, calling them “technical.” In April, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko will visit Washington for meetings with the IMF and the World Bank.

“US President Donald Trump is seeking a deal over Ukrainian minerals, including valuable rare earth metals, as part of his terms for ending the war and as a way to return billions of dollars in US military aid to Kyiv,” the report said.
