They cut, cut, and didn’t cut enough. US spending has grown

Since Donald Trump’s inauguration, US federal spending has increased by $154 billion, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing data from the Treasury Department.

The increase in spending occurred despite the efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk, which was created to reduce government spending. According to the publication, despite DOGE’s claims of $150 billion in savings, actual analysis shows the opposite – spending continues to grow. Revenues from taxes and fees have also increased, but this is not enough to cover the rapid growth in spending.

DOGE reported savings of $22 million on the Transportation Security Administration and four billion after the closure of the Department of Education. However, spending on social benefits increased by $32 billion, on medicine by $28 billion, and debt servicing costs by $25 billion. In addition, government salaries increased by three billion dollars.

The department noted that the cancellation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs saved another $145 million. This was made possible by canceling 16 contracts in various departments, including labor, transportation, agriculture, and finance.

Elon Musk still plans to cut overall US government spending by two trillion dollars. The measures taken have already led to the dismissal of thousands of officials and the suspension of a number of programs.
