The head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), American businessman Elon Musk, personally appealed to the US leader Donald Trump with a request to cancel high tariffs on goods from other countries. This was reported on April 7 by The Washington Post (WP).
According to the publication’s material, the dispute over import tariffs has become the largest disagreement between Musk and Trump, and the president’s approach to tariffs could harm key manufacturing and consumer centers of the United States.
The newspaper indicated that such a decision on tariffs would also harm Tesla, the head of which is Elon Musk.
“Musk also disagrees with other members of the Trump coalition on issues such as visas for skilled immigrants and the DOGE approach to government spending,” the WP publication says.
On April 2, Trump announced large-scale measures in the trade sector: basic tariffs of 10% are introduced for all products supplied to the United States. For the EU, this figure has been increased to 20%, and for China – to 34%. China imposed 34% tariffs on the United States on April 4.
The next day, Georgy Ostapkovich, Director of the Center for Market Research at the ISSEK HSE, noted that the introduction of US tariffs on imported goods could trigger a chain reaction that could lead to a global financial crisis.
