European Gas Prices Rise as Optimism Fades About Ukraine Talks

European natural gas rose after US and Ukrainian leaders sparred on Friday, throwing into doubt recent efforts to reach a deal with Russia on ending the war.

Benchmark futures gained as much as 6.7% after posting their biggest monthly loss in a year. US President Donald Trump’s attempts to work toward a ceasefire had raised expectations that some lost Russian gas flows might return to Europe, but the prospect faded after a disastrous meeting on Friday with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
